The Bumthang Cultural Trek offers an immersive journey through Bhutan’s spiritual heartland, exploring the culturally rich Bumthang Valley, home to some of the kingdom’s oldest Buddhist temples, monasteries, and sacred sites. This gentle three-day trek is combined with an in-depth cultural tour of Bhutan’s iconic western valleys, including Paro, Thimphu, Punakha, and Trongsa.

The trekking route passes through picturesque villages, alpine meadows, blue pine forests, and scrub bamboo-covered hills, providing breathtaking mountain scenery and close interaction with local communities. Designed for average fitness levels, this trek is ideal for travelers seeking a harmonious blend of nature, culture, and spirituality, and is especially recommended for nature lovers and cultural explorers.

Trek Itinerary

Day 01: Bumthang – Ngang Lhakhang (Trek Begins)

Distance: 14 km | Duration: 3–4 hours

The trek begins along the Chamkhar Chu River, passing through tranquil meadows, blue pine forests, bamboo groves, villages, and monasteries. This gentle walking day offers a relaxed introduction to trekking in Bhutan.

Overnight at farmhouse | Altitude: 2,900m

Day 02: Ngang Lhakhang – Ugyencholing

Distance: 19 km | Duration: 7–8 hours

Ascend gradually through juniper forests toward Phephe La Pass (3,360m). Enjoy panoramic views before descending into Tang Valley and reaching Ugyencholing Village, known for its traditional lifestyle and historic estates.

Overnight at guesthouse or campsite | Altitude: 2,670m

Day 03: Ugyencholing – Bumthang

Distance: 11 km | Duration: 4 hours

Visit the 16th-century Ugyencholing Palace, now a museum showcasing traditional Bhutanese rural life. En route back to Bumthang, stop at Mebartsho (Burning Lake), a sacred site associated with Terton Pema Lingpa and Bhutanese spiritual legends.
