Jomolhari Trek

9 Days

Overview

The Jomolhari Trek is one of Bhutan’s most iconic and rewarding long-distance treks, extending beyond the popular Jomolhari Loop. With dramatic altitude variations ranging from 2,500m to nearly 5,000m, this trek showcases an extraordinary diversity of landscapes, flora, and wildlife within the pristine Himalayas.

The highlight of the journey is the unforgettable view of Mount Jomolhari (7,314m) from Jomolhari Base Camp at Jangothang, widely regarded as one of the most beautiful campsites in the Himalayan region. Along the route, trekkers pass through deep river valleys, alpine meadows, high mountain passes, yak herder settlements, and ancient dzong ruins, all within the protected landscapes of Jigme Dorji National Park.

This trek also offers excellent acclimatization opportunities, breathtaking views of Jichu Drake, and chances to spot rare Himalayan wildlife such as blue sheep. The Jomolhari Trek is ideal for trekkers seeking a challenging yet culturally rich Himalayan adventure.

Trek Itinerary

Day 1: Gunitsawa Village – Sharna Zampa

Begin the trek at Gunitsawa Village after permit formalities. A short, gentle walk along the river leads to the peaceful campsite at Sharna Zampa, ideal for acclimatising on the first day.

Day 2: Sharna Zampa – Thangthangkha

Follow the Paro Chhu Valley through forests and meadows with gradual ascents and descents. The valley narrows as altitude increases, and weather permitting, enjoy your first distant views of Mount Jomolhari from the campsite.

Day 3: Thangthangkha – Jangothang (Jomolhari Base Camp)

Trek through alpine landscapes and yak herders’ settlements before reaching Jangothang, one of Bhutan’s most scenic campsites, offering spectacular close-up views of Mount Jomolhari.

Day 4: Jangothang Halt (Acclimatisation Day)

A rest day to explore nearby ridges and glacial lakes. Optional hikes offer panoramic views of Jomolhari and Jichu Drake, with chances to spot blue sheep.

Day 5: Jangothang – Lingshi

Cross Tshophu Lake and climb to Bhonte La Pass (4,890m), the highest point of the trek. Descend into the Dhumzo Chhu Valley to the campsite near Lingshi.

Day 6: Lingshi – Shodu

Ascend to Yeli La Pass (4,930m) for sweeping Himalayan views, then descend steeply to the remote campsite at Shodu.

Day 7: Shodu – Barshong

Follow the Thimphu Chhu River through rhododendron forests and waterfalls, ending the day near the historic ruins of Barshong Dzong.

Day 8: Barshong – Dolam Kencho

Descend through dense mixed forests before climbing gently to open pastureland and a scenic meadow campsite.

Day 9: Dolam Kencho – Dodena (End of Trek)

Trek through forested trails with chances to see langurs before reaching Dodena and exiting Jigme Dorji National Park. Optional hike to Cherri Monastery marks a memorable end to the journey.
